Prevention is a key word in the dental profession. It is the goal of every dentist to see to it that their patients never have to undergo a serious procedure. One of the best tools that dentists employ to ensure that the goal is met is radiographic technology, or x-ray.
Scientific knowhow has brought a lot of improvement to the field of dental radiography both intraoral and extraoral. Just as the name implies Intraoral x-rays are taken from inside the mouth and are used mainly to detect tooth decay but also to check for the signs of impending gum disease, to monitor tooth development, and to examine bone structure. If a problem can be spotted early enough it can be treated with minimal complication or if damage has occurred it may be able to be reversed. X-ray technology is also beneficial for the patient who has excellent checkups because it contributes to the maintenance of good oral health.
Extraoral x-rays present a bigger picture. They include images not only of the teeth but also of the jawbone and the skull. These pictures show the dentist how the bones and teeth are interacting generally and can help greatly in the examination and treatment plan if something is wrong. An impacted tooth for instance, can be better evaluated by using an extraoral x-ray.
Intraoral x-rays are the type that patients are most familiar with. We open our mouth and the dental technician inserts the mechanism that holds the film in place. We bite down on it and the technician snaps a picture. It is a safe procedure that is made even moreso with the lead apron that is placed over us before the x-rays are taken, to protect other parts of our body from radiation.
