You Really Do Need A Full Two Minutes

We all know that it’s important to brush our teeth every day, but what is this two-minute rule all about? The consensus of professional opinion is that it takes at least that long to thoroughly clean all of our teeth. Some dentists actually recommend brushing for three minutes at a time, twice a day. But you can’t just brush any old way and expect to get the best results.

In order to get rid of the bacterial plaque that collects on your teeth, you have to brush gently using short strokes around each individual tooth. Too much pressure can harm your tooth enamel. Dentists have suggested using your non-dominant hand to keep from brushing too hard. Pay attention to the inside surfaces of the teeth as well as the tongue. Any bacteria that is still left behind can be removed by flossing.

Two or three minutes doesn’t sound like a very long time but it can seem so when you’re just standing there brushing your teeth and you’re tired and ready for bed or when you’re short on time and rushing to get ready for the day ahead. It may be easier to use an electronic toothbrush that is equipped with a timing apparatus that automatically turns the brush off after two minutes have passed.
