Good Habits Bring Good Results

We all look forward to having a good dental checkup but do you know what you can do in between appointments that will increase your odds? Of course we need to brush and floss every day but the way we go about doing it can make all the difference. Studies have proven that it is necessary to brush for at least two minutes at a time in order to reach every nook and cranny between your teeth and thoroughly clean your mouth. If you don’t want to bother counting out the seconds in your head set a timer or listen to a favorite tune on your headset and choose a time of day when you can devote your full attention to brushing your teeth properly – make that two times a day.

The toothbrush that you use can actually make a difference in the results that you will see. Why do you think your dental hygienist includes a new brush in the “goodie bag” that she gives you at the end of your appointment? The bristles on a toothbrush tend to fray with time and they can be a germ magnet. Professionals recommend that you replace your toothbrush every three months and always right after recovering from an illness.

You may think it odd that your dentist or hygienist would recommend chewing gum but they often do. Chewing stimulates the salivary glands which produce the saliva that washes away bacteria and prevents dry mouth. Sugar-free chewing gum can serve as a more than adequate replacement when flossing isn’t possible.

These and other preventive methods only work if you are dedicated to following a home regimen for good oral health. Start by promising yourself to make your next dental checkup even better than your last one!
